Winter Spare the Air Alert - Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011

A Winter Spare the Air Alert has been issued for tomorrow, Thursday, January 6, 2011, in the Bay Area.
Wood burning is banned both indoors and outdoors tomorrow, for the full 24 hours.
Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices. This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano Counties.
Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulate matter (PM) pollution from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.
For more information about the wood burning rule, or to check before you burn, visit www.sparetheair.org or call 1-877-4-NO-BURN.
You can also call 1-800-430-1515 and register to receive automatic phone calls when a Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect.

Thank you for doing your part to Spare the Air!

Holiday Safety Tips!
Happy Holiday's!
The holidays are here. As you spend more time with family and friends, or go shopping to prepare, here are a few reminders to help you stay safe. Please contact Steffanie Turini, Neighborhood Watch coordinator, at 777.3177, or email steffaniet@cupertino.org, if you have questions, or would like to schedule a Neighborhood Watch meeting.
If You're Traveling
• Get an automatic timer for your lights.
• Ask a neighbor to watch your home and to park in the driveway from time to time. In addition, contact the Sheriff's Department to request vacation patrol checks.
• Don't forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped. If it piles up, it's a sure sign you're gone.
If You're Out for the Evening
• Turn on lights and a radio or TV so it looks like someone's home.
• Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave, even if it's just for a few minutes.
• Don't display gifts where they can be seen from outside.
If You're Shopping
• Stay alert and be aware of what's going on around you.
• Park in a well-lighted space and be sure to lock the car, close the windows, and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card whenever possible.
• Deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers. Don't overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.
Today is a Winter Spare the Air Alert - December 1, 2010
The first Winter Spare the Air Alert has been called for today, December 1, 2010. Air quality in the Bay Area is unhealthy.
Wood smoke is the largest source of wintertime air pollution in the Bay Area. When there is no wind to disperse pollutants from smoke, they become trapped close to the ground and can build up to unhealthy levels, making it difficult for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to breathe.
-The burning of wood and firelogs is banned both indoors and outdoors today.
-The use of any and all wood-burning devices including fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves and outdoor fire-pits is illegal.
-For more information about the Wood Burning Rule, or to check before you burn, visit www.sparetheair.org or call 1-877-4-NO-BURN.
Thank you for making clean air choices every day!
